Sometimes we see things being done but don’t think about the importance it holds. Let’s discuss the purpose of a base coat and why you should always use it.
A clear base coat is to your nails what sunscreen is to your skin. It’s a protective barrier between your natural nails and the damaging effects of nail polish. It prevents staining and yellowing of your nails.
Some base coats are fortified with vitamin E or calcium and some are even infused with garlic. These are meant to nourish, strengthen and prevent breakage.
You might notice that some base coats have a thicker consistency than others. This is because the thinner ones are merely used to lightly coat the nail so that the nail polish can adhere to your nail more easily. The thicker ones are meant to fill out ridges and lines to smooth out the surface of the nail. This will allow the nail polish to glide on seamlessly and prevent streakiness.
Even though you might want to skip out on this step, I suggest you add just a few more minutes to your nail painting sessions, especially if you’re into candy apple red or midnight blue. It might seem frivolous but everything has a purpose. Increase the longevity of your polish and protect your nails with one little layer of base coat.
