Favourite Drugstore Mascaras

When it comes to make up, mascara is by far my favourite thing ever! It’s something so simple, but yet it makes a world of a difference. On those days when I really don’t feel like wearing a full face of make up; brows, concealer, my strawberry scented tinted lip balm and, of course, mascara is all I need for a quick transformation from zombie face.

While I very much do enjoy mascara, it’s one of those things that I feel like you don’t have to splurge on. No matter how many times different brands come out with “new and improved” mascara formulas, they’re never going to convince me that they’re all that different. It’s mascara for crying out loud! There’s only so much you can do.

The drugstore has a cornucopia of mascaras to pick from. Yes, some are better than others, but that also depends on what you are looking for in a mascara.

Personally, I prefer my mascara to give me volume. I already have a good enough length to my lashes and they are naturally curled, but they’re not very thick. If I use a lengthening mascara, I end up looking like I have 5 little hairs and… that’s not a good look.

Here are four of my favourite drugstore mascaras:

1. L’Oreal Voluminous Waterproof Mascara

What I like about this mascara is that it has a long wand with short synthetic bristles that evenly coat my lashes. It gives me an even amount of a little bit of length and a little bit of volume to achieve a natural look. The consistency of the formula is not too dry nor is it too wet. It’s very creamy and easy to work with.

2. Maybelline The Colossal Big Shot Volum’ Express Mascara

I think this might just be my favourite one out of them all . It gives me A LOT of volume as well as some extra length. I especially like the shape of the brush. Because of its conical fashion, it gives my outermost lashes extreme length and volume while the inner corners are a little bit more subtle. It ends up giving me wispy and fluffy lashes, making it look like I’m wearing falsies. BUYER BEWARE: The brush is quite big and the formula is quite thick. If your lashes are more on the short side, you probably won’t like this mascara. It’s going to end up making your lashes heavy and stumpy and it will smudge.

3. Essence Lash Princess

This is the most affordable one on this list but don’t be fooled by the price. It’s a total gem! The brush is similar to the L’Oreal Voluminous mascara. However, this one really does live up to the claim of giving a false lash effect. It is a bit smudgy so you just need to be a little more careful.

4. Maybelline Lash Sensational

What I like about this mascara is the shape of the wand. It has a curved silicone wand with short bristles on the inner part and longer bristles on the outer part. Due to the wand, I can use this mascara for both my upper and lower lashes. I use the inner part to volumize and the outer part to lengthen.

Like I said before, I LOVE mascaras which means I use a lot of it. Overtime due to curling and always having to remove the mascara at the end of the day, my lashes can become weak. It’s just like regular hair. You need to condition them too.

After I’ve removed all my make up, I use a clean eyeliner brush and line my lash lines with a little bit of castor oil and sleep with it overnight. When I wake up in the morning, I wash it off. It also acts like a primer for your mascara. I’ve been doing this for quite some time now and have noticed that I have less eyelashes falling out.

Let’s play a drinking game. Drink a cup of water every time I mention the word “mascara” in this post.
